Residents petition UNRA over a silting wetland.

Residents of Kyabugimbi Sub County in Bushenyi district have petitioned the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to intervene and save one of the wetlands in the area from silting.

The wetland in question is along the Nyakabirizi-Kyabugimbi-Buhweju road which is maintained by UNRA.

Lauben Mugarura the Kyabugimbi sub county district councilor accused UNRA for failing to mind about the threatened wetland during the process of road maintenance.

“The drainage system is always poorly done and this has caused flooding and silting of the wetland,” Mugarura adding that, “we are wondering why a government agency that should be mindful of protecting the environment can fail to see this.”

The wetland which is suffering silting.

“Part of this wetland’s system supplies people with water and you can imagine the water they are using now,” Mugarura expressed adding that, “how about the animals (aquatic life) that have been depending on this wetland?”

He urged UNRA to always follow-up the road contractors to see how they always implement the environmental impact assessment guidelines. According to experts, UNRA was supposed to lower down the pipes to allow free movement of water.Water is blocked and as a result it has caused flooding and silting of the wetland.
